Nirbhik Bangla, Asansol: Signaling a major political shift in Asansol's political arena and delivering a heavy blow to the ruling Trinamool Congress, several women workers and leaders joined the Congress party. This defection took place on Sunday during a special Mahila Congress organizational program held at the district Congress office adjacent to the Church More on the busiest GT Road in Asansol. This political turnaround has already sparked intense excitement and speculation in the industrial town's political circles.
According to Congress sources, a total of 66 women workers and supporters from Barabani, Kulti, and Asansol South blocks officially embraced the Congress party on this day. According to political analysts, such fractures in Trinamool's women's wing ahead of upcoming elections are fueling internal resentment within the ruling party.
It is learned that under the leadership of Moumita Banerjee Sengupta, an influential leader of the Trinamool women's wing in Kulti block, nearly 30 Trinamool workers left the party and joined the Congress. At the same time, the ruling party suffered a major blow in the Barabani block as well. There, under the leadership of Manshila Kumari Pandey, around 30 more women joined the Congress. Additionally, six active women workers of the Trinamool Mahila Congress from the Asansol South block also left the ruling camp of the state and took the Congress flag into their hands.
Present at Sunday's joining rally and organizational meeting were State Mahila Congress President Srabanti Singh, District Mahila Congress Asansol President Srilata Banerjee, prominent Congress leader and advocate Shampa Sarkar, along with other top leadership of the party. The leaders welcomed the new entrants by handing over the party flags to them.
From the stage of the event, the Congress leadership claimed that these women workers who left Trinamool will multiply the organizational strength of the Mahila Congress in West Bardhaman district. Such continuous programs are being undertaken with the objective of giving a tough fight to the ruling party in various levels of elections, starting from the upcoming panchayat elections, and further strengthening the organization.
Political circles opine that the growing trend of defection among workers and supporters of the Trinamool Congress at various levels could play a crucial role in reclaiming the lost political ground of the Congress and increasing its organizational strength in this industrial belt in the coming days.
