Baijid Mandal, South 24 Pargana: After a long time of speculation, former CPM leader Pratikur Rahman finally joined Trinamool Congress. On Saturday, he picked up the party flag from the hands of All India General Secretary Abhishek Bandyopadhyay at the party office in South 24 Parganas, Amtala. Last Sunday, Pratikur sent a letter seeking dismissal from all posts in the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Since then there has been speculation about his political future. Ali Muddin's efforts to retain him and the initiative of senior leader Biman Basu ultimately did not bear fruit, according to the political circles. Notably, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Pratikur Rahman was contesting as a CPM candidate against Abhishek Bandyopadhyay in the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency. The lifting of the Trinamool flag by Abhishek after two years is undoubtedly significant from the political point of view. According to sources, many area committee editors and members of Diamond Harbor and Yadavpur and some members of the district committee also joined him. Meanwhile, CPM State Secretary Mohammad Selim, in a recent speech, raised the issue of Pratikur and said, “My feelings are like the grief of losing a child.” He said that Pratikur was one of the workers who were trusted to strengthen the organization. After joining Trinamool, Pratikur Rahman claimed that the fight of মমতা বন্দোপা ধযায় and Abhishek বন্দযোপা ধয়া against the anti-people policy of the Center and to stop BJP has inspired him. Therefore, he said that he has taken this decision due to ideological reasons. Abhishek Banddyopadhyay said, "Pratikur is one among the many opposition parties of CPEM who are actively seen in the fields. Open our doors to such workers who do politics for the people and not for personal interest." Political analysts feel that this party change is very significant in the politics of South 24 Gujarat ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
