On Sunday morning, a horrific road accident took place on the Asansol-bound service road of National Highway 19, under the Chaurangi Phari jurisdiction of Kulti police station in Asansol. This tragic accident created immense panic throughout the area. According to eyewitnesses, a speeding banana-laden lorry was heading towards Asansol from Guwahati on Sunday morning. Suddenly, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed violently into the rear of another lorry that was already stationary on the service road.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the front portion of the banana-laden lorry was completely mangled. The driver and the helper got trapped inside the cabin with severe injuries. Upon receiving news of the accident, the police from Chaurangi Phari and a special patrolling team of the National Highway reached the spot within moments. Local residents also lent a hand in the rescue operations. After prolonged efforts using gas cutters and other means, the injured were rescued from the lorry's cabin. They were rushed to the Asansol District Hospital in a police ambulance, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, due to the collision from behind, the stationary lorry ahead lost control and plunged straight off the road. The driver of that lorry also sustained minor injuries, but hospital sources stated that he is currently out of danger and stable. The accident caused a brief traffic jam on the national highway's service road. Later, heavy cranes were brought in by the police administration to remove the wrecked lorries and completely normalize traffic movement. Kulti police station is investigating whether dense fog or reckless driving was behind this accident.
