The intense tension and clashes that erupted on Sunday centering around a cultural event at Kolkata's renowned educational institution, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), have currently thrown the campus into a volatile state. Following an escalated situation during an event organized by a private organization, clashes between two factions left several students and professors injured, sparking sharp reactions across the entire educational community.
The genesis of Sunday's incident traces back to an event organized by a private organization within the institute premises. According to eyewitnesses and a large section of the students, certain statements made during the event were provocative and contrary to the campus's ethos. When some general students stepped forward to protest this, the situation suddenly escalated. The protesting students clearly alleged that when they tried to register a peaceful protest, a sudden attack was launched upon them. Several students were seriously injured in this clash. Not stopping there, despite the presence of police to control the situation, scuffles and tussles reportedly continued between the two sides right in front of them. The agitating students even claimed that some teachers or professors of the institute were also subjected to harassment during the incident.
On the other hand, the accused event-organizing organization presented a different picture of the entire incident. A representative of the organization claimed that the event was organized within the institute premises following all rules, proper procedures, and by paying the rent. Countering the allegations, they claimed that during the event, students surrounded and attacked them without any provocation and subsequently confined them for a long time. The organizers claimed they were physically assaulted and attempts were made to vandalize their vehicles.
In the wake of this incident, the SRFTI premises turned volatile in an instant. Students united to block the buses of the organizing organization and blockaded the main gate of the institute, bursting into fierce protests. Even as Sunday evening rolled into night, the situation both inside and outside the campus did not fully normalize. To maintain law and order on the campus and avoid any major untoward incidents under the prevailing circumstances, a large police force and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed in the area.
As a result of the incident, both sides have begun the process of filing complaints against each other at the police station, with counter-allegations coming to light. The local police station and administration are investigating the exact specific reasons behind the eruption of this clash and whether there was any other provocation behind it. Conscious citizens and students have also started raising questions about the role of the institute authorities regarding how such violent incidents could occur within an educational institution.
