Political tension is increasing over the extraction of sand from Damodhar river in Mejhiya Ghat area of বাঁকুড়া district. BJP MLA Agnimitra Pal raised serious allegations and claimed that despite a valid lease, the contractor has no right to divert the flow by constructing a temporary dam in the middle of the river.
According to the complaint, a company named KK Minerals has been given the contract to lift sand. But he claims that the way sand is being lifted by building a dam in the middle of the river, it is completely illegal and dangerous for the environment. He said, as a result of illegal mining, the water level of the river is gradually decreasing, due to which the water crisis in the surrounding areas is becoming acute.
He further alleged that the pillars of the drinking water pipeline in Kalajhariya area have been damaged due to sand lifting. Besides raising the issue of Mejia Ghat cremation ground in Ballabhpur, he said that due to change in the course of the river, cremation is not being done in the river naturally after death, which is against the religious customs.
Note that a few days ago, there was news that Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted an operation in the KMC Ministry of Police office in Durgapur. It is learned that two persons named Kiran Khan and Chinmayh Mandal have been arrested in a sand trafficking related case.
Agnimitra Pal has raised questions on the role of administration and police and claimed that virtually no strict action is being taken against illegal mining and the extracted sand is being dumped elsewhere.
Now it remains to be seen what action the administration takes in view of this complaint and how active it is in stopping illegal sand extraction in Damodhar river.Politics
