Nirbheek Bengali, Asansol, West Bengal: A few more months are left for the West Bengal Assembly elections of 2026. Before that, the political situation in the state is becoming increasingly heated. All political parties have entered the electoral fray. On one hand, the ruling party Trinamool Congress wants to counter the BJP by highlighting its various people-oriented projects, while on the other hand, the BJP is launching a fierce attack against the Mamata government on various alleged corruption charges including coal, sand, stone, cow slaughter, education etc.BJP alleges that the common people of the state have been deprived of the Central Government projects and Trinamool Congress is coming back to power again and again on the basis of the votes of Bangladeshi immigrants. In this situation, after the Asha workers, this time the movement of sanitation workers has increased the headache of the state government. Asha workers, women and sanitation workers have been protesting for a long time demanding increase in minimum wage, PF and ISI benefits, providing identity cards and recognition of casual workers. This movement has become a big challenge for the ruling party in the face of elections. Recently, in the state budget, it was announced to increase the allowance of ASHA workers by about one thousand rupees, but no claim of the sanitation workers was accepted. The Corporation Administration claims that the financial condition of the Municipal Corporation is not good at present, salary increase is not possible in the next two years – although other demands can be discussed. In the last few days, the cleanliness system of Asansol city has practically broken down. Common people are becoming uncomfortable with the accumulation of sewage sludge and foul smell in various areas of the city. Opposition parties have also become active in this movement. CPM, Congress and BJP took to the streets and joined the movement. At some places the opposition workers themselves are defying the government by clearing the garbage accumulated on the roads, while at other places efforts are being made to collect their demands by gheraoing the Asansol Municipal Corporation. According to the political circles, this movement of ASHA workers and sanitation workers can become a big issue in the upcoming assembly elections, which the opposition wants to use as a tool to create public opinion against the government.
