'Nirbheek Bengali, Veteran politician Mukul Roy passed away. He was 72 years old at the time of his death. He was suffering from many physical problems including kidney for a long time. This senior leader breathed his last late on Sunday night while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Kolkata. As the news of his demise spread, a shadow of mourning descended upon the political arena. According to family sources, he was ill for quite some time. Due to deteriorating physical condition, he had to be admitted to the hospital several times. He died late Sunday night while undergoing treatment. As soon as the news of his death spread, party leaders, workers and supporters gathered in front of his residence. The process of bringing his body home from the hospital has started. He was known as an influential organizer. Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of All India Trinamool Congress. He held important responsibilities since the formation of the party in 1998 and later became a member of the Rajya Sabha. In 2018 he added Bharatiya Janata Party. In the 2021 assembly elections, he won from Krishnanagar North Center and was elected MLA. Later, he again returned to TMC and resigned from the post of MLA, as a result, he remained in office as BJP MLA. The issue of rejection of his MLA post took it to the court. Calcutta High Court gave its verdict rejecting the post of MLA and the Supreme Court of India gave a stay order on that verdict. As a result, he remained in the post of MLA till the last day of his life. His journey in politics started with the help of Congress. Later, he took on important organizational responsibilities in Trinamool Congress. He served as Deputy Minister of the Union Cabinet. In his long political career, he became known as 'Bangi Plazatir Chanakya' due to multiple party changes and strategic organizational role. Although many people stayed away from active politics, political discussions continued around his name till the last day. His demise has brought a deep sense of mourning in the political circles of the state. Leaders of various political parties have expressed condolences to his family.
