Nirbhik Bangla, Asansol, July 26: The detective branch of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate has arrested two suspended Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) for allegedly extorting money illegally from truck drivers at Rampur Checkpost under Kulti police station in Asansol, West Burdwan district. The arrested individuals are Nazimul Haque and Anupam Bandyopadhyay.
The allegation is that a truck was stopped at the Rampur interstate checkpost, located on the West Bengal-Jharkhand border, and a bribe of 22,000 rupees was demanded. After this allegation came to light, the state transport department, under the directive of Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari, temporarily dismissed the two officials on July 23 in accordance with the 'West Bengal Services Rules, 1971.' Simultaneously, the Anti-Corruption Bureau was tasked with investigating the matter. A complaint was also filed at Kulti police station regarding the incident.
Since their suspension, the two accused MVIs had been in hiding. On Saturday night, they were arrested from Jhargram by the detective branch of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate.
On Sunday, the police produced the arrested individuals before the Asansol court and sought a seven-day remand. However, the court rejected their bail plea and ordered a two-day police remand instead.
A police official stated that questioning the arrested individuals would help determine if others were involved in the racket and uncover the full details of the extortion incident.
