The administration has become active to control market prices and prevent black-marketing of essential commodities. On Tuesday, high-ranking officials of the Durgapur subdivision administration, Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC), Agricultural Marketing Department, and police administration raided a large sugar godown in the Shalbagan area of Benachity market, the busiest market in Durgapur. Recently, unchecked price hikes of essential goods including sugar had been causing resentment among common people. Based on those complaints, this joint operation was conducted.
Present during today's surprise raid were DCP East of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, Raspreet Singh, ACP Subir Roy, Durgapur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abul Kalam Azad, along with police forces and other prominent administration officials. Upon entering the godown, they thoroughly examined the current market price per bag of sugar, the stock register, and the complete wholesale selling process.
According to administrative sources, even during festive seasons or normal times, a section of dishonest traders attempts to drive up prices by artificially creating shortages of goods in the market. This strict measure has been taken to prevent hurting the pockets of common people and keeping market prices beyond reach. It was also checked whether godown owners or traders were hoarding extra goods in violation of rules. A clear message has been given by the administration that such operations against black-marketers and profiteers will continue uninterrupted in the coming days, and the administration will always maintain a strict stance to protect the interests of the common people.
