Subsidence in the coal-mining areas of Paschim Bardhaman district has been a long-standing problem. Due to this, many families constantly have to live with the risk to their lives and property. Recently, the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) authorities shifted one such family from a subsidence-prone dangerous area to a safe shelter. According to the rules, until permanent rehabilitation was arranged, accommodation was provided by ECL for that family in an allocated quarter. However, proof that there is no security even in that safe shelter was found recently. Taking the opportunity of the family members being temporarily away, it is alleged that the main door lock of that quarter was broken and another key was fitted. This sensational incident has created widespread commotion and tension in the area.

According to information received from local sources, the ancestral home of Minu Pal, a resident of Kenda village, is located in a completely subsidence-prone dangerous area. As it became impossible to live there at the risk of life, the ECL authorities, taking a humanitarian view, allocated a temporary quarter in her name. Until a permanent rehabilitation arrangement is made for the family, they were supposed to live in this accommodation.

However, trouble arose elsewhere. It is alleged that a few days ago, Minu Pal and other members of her family were away from home for some work. Miscreants utilized this opportunity. They broke the old lock of the quarter and hung their own new lock there. Later, when the family members returned home, they saw that a different key was fitted to the door and they could not enter the house. The family members were at their wits' end due to this sudden incident.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Minu Pal and her family immediately informed the responsible ECL authorities of the area. At the same time, they lodged a written complaint at the local Kenda outpost demanding swift action. Upon receiving the complaint, the police administration sprang into action. A police force quickly reached the spot and, following legal procedures, broke the new key and lock attached to the quarter. Afterward, under police protection, Minu Pal and her family were re-entered into their designated accommodation.

However, a mystery has loomed over who is involved behind this incident and with what exact motive this attempt at forcible occupation was made. The Kenda outpost police are examining whether any influential syndicate or local vested interest group is behind this conspiracy to usurp the ECL-allocated quarter. A full-fledged investigation into the incident has been initiated.
