Mother Kalyaneshwari Temple, situated on the banks of river Barakar near Maithon Dam in West Bengal, Asansol, West Bengal, is known as one of the oldest and famous Shakti Peethas in East India. This 1200 year old temple is surrounded by deep devotion, faith and many mysterious people's beliefs. Every year lakhs of devotees come here in the hope of fulfilling their wish. The specialty of this temple is that there is no idol of any god or goddess here; A sacred tree is worshiped as the goddess of well-being. Popular belief is that there is an invisible cave beneath this rock and if you touch a small hole in the rock, you get the blessings of the Mother Goddess.

According to popular belief, in the twelfth century, the spiritual seeker Devdas Chattopadhyay came to the dense forest of this region for the purpose of meditation of Mother Kali. At that time the entire area was surrounded by forest. According to public opinion, King of Bengal Ballal Sen was a devotee of that saint. On his advice, the king built the temple of Goddess Shyāmārīngār in the present village of Shabanpur (शरबनपुर). Later, when the population started increasing there, the goddess established herself at the present Kalyaneshwari place. From then onwards the worship of Maa Kalyaneshwari started here. The biggest feature of Mother Kalyaneshwari Temple is that no idol is worshiped here. A huge rock installed in the temple is considered as the form of the goddess. Touching a small hole in one corner of the rock, devotees bow down in faith to seek the blessings of the Mother Goddess. This tradition continues today, century after century.

According to another traditional story, King Ballal Sen's daughter Lakshmi got married to King Kalyani Prasad of Kashmir. Goddess Shyāmārūngār Vigraha is given to them as a gift at the time of marriage. On the way back, they lost their way in the forest and left the beggar at a place. Next day it was no longer possible to move it. Considering this as the wish of the Goddess, a temple is established at that place. Later, according to the name of King Kalyani Prasad, the name of the goddess became Maa Kalyaneshwari.
রহস্যময় নববধূ ও শাঁখারির কাহিনি
One of the most popular legends surrounding the temple is the story of a mysterious bride. It is said that one day a newlywed bride came to the ghats of river Barakar to marry her. When asked for the price of the raw material, he said, take the money from his father Debnath Chattopadhyay in Shabanpur. On reaching there, Shaankhari came to know that Debnath Chattopadhyay had no daughter. Later the two men returned to the river ghat and saw that there was no bride there. Only a woman's footprint can be seen on a stone. It is believed to be the divine goddess. Later a temple was established at that place and Debnath Chattopadhyay became the first devotee.

Most of the devotees come to the court of Mother Goddess Kalyaneshwar with the desire to have a child. By worshiping and praying with local belief and devotion, childless couples are blessed with children. In this belief, many devotees from different parts of the country including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar come here for darshan. Crowd gathered on Tuesday and Saturday Regular worship takes place in the temple every day. But special puja is organized on Tuesday and Saturday. Apart from this, during Kali Puja and Durga Puja, huge religious festivals are organized here and thousands of devotees gather.
