Fearless Bengali, Asansol: Local residents are spending their days in fear due to the long standing landslide problem in the area of ​​Kendra village located within the Jamudiya assembly centre. Due to repeated land subsidence, many families are facing extreme uncertainty about their life and livelihood. Despite the complaints of the local people and several discussions with the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) authorities regarding the demand for rehabilitation, no permanent solution has been found so far. The promise was not fulfilled but the actual work was not done, they claimed. Residents have also raised allegations of irregularities and double standards in the resettlement process. In this situation, about 144 families from the affected area joined the movement today. First, they completely stopped production and transportation in the two open-pit mines of the area. Then the locals joined the protest at the colliery agent office. Tension spread in the area due to the protest. To control the situation, Kendra Police and ICL security guards reached the spot. But the protesters have a clear message - unless there is a proper rehabilitation system, the movement will become more intense in the coming days. In the same context, their demand is that opencast mining work will remain closed until specific assurance is received. The protests are continuing with no clear response from the ECL officials so far.
