Fearless Bengali, Baankudha: To further strengthen the trend of folk songs, a three-day 'Jhumur Song Workshop and Program' has been started in Baankudha city. Organized by the Center for Folk Culture and Tribal Culture and the District Information and Culture Department, this workshop is being held at the Gandhi Vichar Parishad meeting room in the city of Baankudha. It is learned that a total of 100 folk artists from Baankudah, Purulia, West Medinipur and Jharadgram districts participated in this workshop. Basically the artists of Jangalmahal area have contributed here. Baankudha District Information and Culture Officer Ganesh Hasda said, these folk artists play an important role in promoting various government projects. This workshop has been organized to make them more efficient. He said, “Enhancing the skills of the artists of the forest palace and preserving the folk culture – both of these are our goals.” Veteran chandelier artist Prasad Ahir said, in the present times the influence of disharmony is increasing. In that context, the importance of folklore like Jhumur song in taking the society forward in the right direction is immense. Noted Jhumur artist Indrani Mahato says, Jhumur is an ancient folklore, which is deeply connected with the life and feelings of the indigenous people. “Like everything else, Jhumur also seems to be touched by modernity. But we want Jhumur to remain alive with its original and pristine sound,” – his comment. Artist Prashant Mahato said, he is getting the opportunity to learn many new things through this workshop. “I can teach others what we learn. It feels great to be a part of this workshop,” he says. There has been enthusiasm in Shilpimahal around this initiative aimed at preserving and propagating folk culture.
