Uttar Dinajpur, Raiganj: There was extreme tension in the Raipur area of Raiganj in North Dinajpur district since Wednesday morning in protest against the continuous traffic of dumpers and trucks. Local residents took to the streets and joined the road blockade demanding stop of heavy traffic. Residents complain that since many months, dumpers and trucks carrying excess goods have been running freely on this important road. As a result, severe traffic jams are being created every day. The situation becomes more dire especially during school time. It is alleged that it has become virtually impossible for students to reach school on time. Locals claim that even though this road is under PWD, dumpers are plying there carrying double or even more goods without following the rules. Due to this, on the one hand, there is extensive damage to the roads and on the other hand, the lives of common people are also at risk. Out of anger, the residents of the area stopped their cars since Wednesday morning and blocked the road for a long time. Their clear demand is that heavy traffic on this road will have to be stopped without any hesitation. Local resident Arjun Debnath said, “I have been seeing dumpers and trucks running freely for the past few months. It has become impossible for children to travel during school time. This cannot continue like this anymore.” On the other hand, prominent social worker Achintya Deb said, "This is a PWD-owned road. However, the dumper is running with extra load without following any rules. This is ruining the road and making people's lives worse." The local residents said that very soon the matter will be reported to the higher authorities in writing. He also warned of a larger movement in the coming days if a quick solution is not found.
