Nirbhik Bangla, Andal: Having suffered from a severe drinking water crisis for the past two months and severe power outages as a result, the residents of Khandra Nag Kajora Colliery area in Andal finally chose the path of protest. Deprived of basic services like drinking water and facing disconnected electricity for days on end, the common people were already pushed to the brink. Demanding a permanent solution, over a hundred men and women of the area erupted in protest on the colliery premises on Monday morning. In the tense situation, local residents surrounded the colliery manager and vented their anger.
According to local sources, the Nag Kajora Colliery is currently closed. It is initially presumed that the drinking water supply system in the area has completely collapsed as a result of this closure. However, whether there is any other mechanical or administrative fault behind the stoppage of water supply, the actual cause has not yet been confirmed with certainty.
The main complaint of the protesting residents is that for the past two months, they have been struggling for even a single drop of water. Daily life has been completely disrupted due to having to fetch water from distant places. On top of this, with the power connection in the area completely severed for the past few days, everyone from children to senior citizens has been suffering from extreme insecurity and sultry heat in the dark of night. They strongly demanded the immediate normalization of drinking water supply in the area and the uninterrupted, permanent restoration of electricity. Furthermore, the angry locals warned that if the administration and colliery authorities do not resolve this issue soon, they will launch a larger and harsher movement in the coming days.
Satyanarayan Bauri, an aggrieved local resident, stated that drinking water has not been available in the area for several months. Along with this severe water crisis, power service in the colliery area was also completely shut down. He claimed that after intense discontent and repeated appeals from the locals, the power connection was finally restored on Sunday night.
However, even after this temporary relief, the fire of resentment has not been completely extinguished. Satyanarayan alleged that although protests took place in phases from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Monday, no responsible official from ECL (Eastern Coalfields Limited) came forward to listen to the problems of the common people or talk to them. Such an indifferent and irresponsible attitude from the authorities increased the residents' anger manifold.
It is worth noting that amid the intense heat, the common people of the Khandra Nag Kajora Colliery area in Andal have now unitedly raised their voices demanding a permanent solution to the drinking water crisis and full restoration of power services. Extreme tension has spread in the area due to this sudden and intense public protest. However, until the writing of this report, no official reaction has been received from the ECL authorities in this regard. Locals claim that if effective steps are not taken immediately, the situation may take an even more complex turn.
