The police have successfully cracked a recent daring theft case within the jurisdiction of the Barakar out-post under the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate in West Bengal. Along with recovering the stolen gold and silver ornaments, two individuals have been arrested on charges of being involved in this syndicate. At the same time, a 17-year-old minor identified as the prime accused in the incident has been apprehended and sent to a home through the Juvenile Justice Board.
According to police sources, a major theft occurred last week at the residence of Pankaj Srivastava, a resident of Karimdangal area under Ward No. 68 of Barakar. Taking advantage of the vacant house, miscreants broke the door lock, entered the house, ransacked the wardrobe, and fled with gold and silver jewellery worth over one lakh rupees. Following this incident, the homeowner Pankaj Srivastava lodged a written complaint at the Barakar out-post, prompting the police to initiate an investigation.
Realizing the gravity of the incident, a special team was formed under the instructions of Kulti ACP MD Javed Hussain of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate. Based on the analysis of local CCTV footage and information received from local sources, the police initially detained the 17-year-old minor, a resident of the Karimdangal area. During interrogation, he confessed to the theft and informed the police that he had sold the stolen ornaments. Subsequently, the minor was taken into custody and sent to the Juvenile Board.
Based on the information provided by the minor, the Barakar out-post police learned that a person named Rintu Majhi, a resident of Nirsa in Jharkhand, had bought the stolen jewellery from his shop near the Baigunia Durga Temple. Without delay, the police conducted a raid and arrested Rintu Majhi. When produced before the Asansol Sub-Divisional Court, the judge ordered a three-day police remand.
During his custody, the arrested Rintu Majhi was subjected to continuous interrogation. On Wednesday, a police team led by ASI Asim Chakraborty conducted a second intensive raid at Rintu's shop. A large portion of the stolen items, including approximately 250 grams of silver and 6 to 7 grams of gold, was successfully recovered from the shop.
A press conference was organized at the Barakar out-post on Wednesday regarding the matter. Kulti ACP MD Javed Hussain, Kulti Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Ashok Singh Mahapatra, Barakar out-post In-Charge Anjan Rajak, and ASI Asim Chakraborty were present there. The ACP stated that the police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards crime. Buying stolen goods is also a major legal offense, which is why the businessman has also been arrested.
According to police sources, the arrested Rintu Majhi will be produced in the Asansol court again on Thursday. To ascertain whether any other inter-state gang or local dishonest businessmen are involved behind this syndicate, the Barakar police are continuing their investigation and search operations.
