A tragic incident in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, has caused a stir. The hanging body of Brishti Mukherjee, known to be a relative of West Bengal's former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been recovered from her residence. This sudden death has raised various questions in political and administrative circles.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on the morning of September 1, 2026, at around 9:00 AM at her home in Kusumba village under the Rampurhat police station jurisdiction. Brishti Mukherjee's hanging body was recovered from a room on the first floor of the house. Upon noticing the matter, family members and neighbors immediately informed the Rampurhat police station. Upon receiving the news, the police promptly rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to the morgue of the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy to complete legal procedures.
According to family sources, the deceased Brishti Mukherjee was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, a cousin of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Due to this high-profile identity, intense commotion spread across the entire area as soon as the incident came to light. The police have started investigating the entire incident with utmost seriousness.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Brishti Mukherjee's name was also embroiled in the recent primary teacher recruitment irregularities and corruption case that came to light in the state. It was alleged that she had secured her teaching job through irregular or improper means. Subsequently, following court orders and investigations, she lost her job. Investigators are examining whether the mental stress and professional disaster caused by the loss of employment played any role behind her death.
At the same time, the police are not ignoring the aspect of turmoil in her personal life. Local sources and police investigations have revealed that recently, there was domestic discord between Brishti Mukherjee and her husband, and legal proceedings for their divorce were also underway. It is suspected that this mental depression could also be one of the reasons for the suicide.
