The strict stance of the police administration against drug trafficking and illegal businesses across the state has been proven once again through the successful operation by the Salar police station in Murshidabad district. Acting on a tip-off received from a secret source, the police of Salar police station conducted a raid near the PHE crossing on the Salar-Katwa road and recovered about 22 kg 900 grams of illegal cannabis (ganja). A total of two individuals have been arrested for their alleged involvement in this incident, which has created a stir in the area.
According to police sources, around noon on September 6, a special team of Salar police station was lying in wait in the area adjacent to the PHE crossing. The police already had information that a major drug trafficking deal might take place through this route. Acting on this, two suspicious individuals were detained, and a search was conducted on the bags and other belongings they were carrying. Upon searching, the police were left astounded. Over twenty-two and a half kilograms of banned cannabis were recovered from inside the bags and sacks, the current market value of which is estimated to be over a hundred thousand rupees.
Following initial interrogation, the police immediately arrested the two individuals. Specific cases have been registered against the arrested persons under the stringent NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. On Sunday, September 7, the two accused were presented before the Kandi Sub-Divisional Court amidst tight security. The police filed a petition seeking their custody to uncover the extent to which the roots of this drug trafficking syndicate are spread.
Preliminary investigation has revealed to the police that this massive quantity of cannabis was cleverly brought from a specific source in another state or district to Salar and its surrounding areas for sale or smuggling elsewhere. However, investigators are looking into who the masterminds of this ring are and whether a larger inter-state or inter-district drug smuggling syndicate is operating behind it. The local conscious citizenry has praised this success by the Salar police station. Experts believe that such proactive measures by the police will help protect the youth of the area from the clutches of drugs in the future.
