A shadow of profound sorrow descended amidst the festive mood of the festive season. A tragic road accident took place on National Highway 19 in Durgapur on the morning of Maha Saptami of Durga Puja. Three young people lost their lives when a speeding bike crashed violently into the rear of a moving truck. Among the dead are two friends and their female companion. No one could have imagined that the golden moments of celebration would turn into such a tragic ordeal. This incident has cast a pall of gloom over Durgapur as well as the entire Asansol and Bankura regions.
According to police and local sources, the accident occurred on National Highway 19 while heading towards Piyala from Biriungi More in Durgapur. The police have already identified the three deceased. The two dead youths are Sayan Goswami and Tanmay Ghosh, residents of the Hirapur police station area in Asansol. The deceased young woman accompanying them is Krishna Ganguly, whose home is in Bankura district. Preliminary estimates suggest that they fell victim to this unfortunate accident while going out somewhere to enjoy puja pandal hopping or leisure on the morning of Saptami.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bike was running at a high speed while heading towards Piyala after crossing Biriungi More. At that moment, suddenly losing control, the bike crashed violently into the back of a moving truck ahead of it. The intensity of the impact was so horrific that the front part of the bike was completely crushed, and all three riders including the bike driver were thrown violently onto the asphalt road. Due to severe injuries to their heads and various parts of their bodies, they collapsed on the road in a bloody state and their condition became critical right at the spot.
Immediately after the incident, intense panic and commotion spread across the busy national highway. Local residents stepped forward first and informed the police. Upon receiving the news, the personnel of Durgapur police station and traffic guard promptly reached the spot. They very quickly rescued the three injured in a bloody state and took them to the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Hospital. However, after arriving at the hospital's emergency department, defying all efforts of the doctors, the on-duty physicians declared all three of them dead.
Due to this tragic consequence on the morning of the festival, a wave of mourning has descended upon the families of the deceased in Asansol and Bankura. As the joy of the puja turned into sorrow in an instant, friends are left grief-stricken alongside the families. Meanwhile, the police have started an investigation to find out the exact cause of this accident. All aspects are being examined—such as what the speed limit of the bike was, whether the riders were wearing helmets at that moment, and whether the driver of the killer truck showed any carelessness or violated traffic rules. At the same time, the bodies have been recovered and sent to the hospital for post-mortem.
