With the inspiring slogan "Durgapur will play, Durgapur will win", the celebration of National Sports Day began with great enthusiasm in the industrial city of Durgapur. Aimed at encouraging Indians to take up sports and paying tribute to the legendary hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, the presence of sports enthusiasts in the city was notable from Saturday morning onwards.
On Saturday morning, a colorful rally was organized from the premises of Sidhu Kanu Indoor Stadium, one of the central locations in the city. A large number of students from various schools and colleges, members of local sports clubs, and sports-loving common people spontaneously participated in the rally. Adorned with banners, placards, and national flags, the well-decorated rally traversed several important streets of the city and concluded at Bhagat Singh Stadium. Durgapur West MLA Lakshman Chandra Ghorui participated in the rally as a special guest. Along with him, many prominent and renowned former players and sports organizers of the city were present.
After the rally, the main program of Sports Day was auspiciously inaugurated at Bhagat Singh Stadium through the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag. Thereafter, the guests paid floral tribute by garlanding the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand. Speaking at the event, MLA Lakshman Chandra Ghorui said, "Sports is not only the key to physical fitness, but it also makes the youth disciplined and mentally strong. Such initiatives are highly commendable for the development of Durgapur's sports infrastructure and for highlighting local talents."
According to the organizing committee, the National Sports Day celebration will not be limited to just a one-day rally. On the occasion of this celebration, multiple sports-related activities, friendly football matches, athletics competitions, and indoor games such as table tennis have been organized across Durgapur for a week. The main objective of this grand initiative is to steer the children and young generation of the city away from digital screens and lethargy towards the sports fields, and to brighten Durgapur's name in the field of sports.
