Nirbhik Bangla, Durgapur: Around 500 sanitation workers gathered in front of the 3rd ward office of Durgapur Municipal Corporation on Wednesday, alleging that they have been deprived of government benefits and fair wages for a long time. The workers from seven wards submitted a memorandum to the ward official with their various demands. The sanitation workers alleged that despite promises of equal pay for equal work for 15 years, it has not been implemented. They also alleged that in the past, they had received threats of losing their jobs when they tried to demand their rights. Due to the recent rise in prices of essential commodities, it has become extremely difficult to run their households with their current wages, the protesting workers said. Therefore, they demanded an increase in wages and other government benefits. Atanu Rudra, the official of the 3rd ward, said that the memorandum submitted by the sanitation workers would be sent to the state's Minister of Urban Development, Agnimitra Paul. On the same day, Chandrashekhar Bandopadhyay, the BJP MLA from Durgapur East, assured the sanitation workers of his support and demanded that their problems be considered seriously. He also alleged that the opposition might be involved in instigating the workers by misleading them. The sanitation workers demanded that the administration take effective steps to ensure their long-overdue legitimate demands and government benefits as soon as possible.
