Kulti Police achieved a major breakthrough in a sensational early morning incident of a gold chain snatched from an elderly woman's neck in Kulti. By keeping a watch on an inter-police station criminal gang, the police arrested two criminals involved in the incident and recovered the entire snatched gold necklace. The arrested individuals have been identified as Dayamay Sinha and Bablu Das. Both are reportedly residents of the Hirapur police station area in Asansol.
The incident occurred on August 12. Manju Mitra, a 72-year-old senior citizen and resident of the Birajpally (Sannyasi Than) area under Kulti Police Station, had gone to drop her granddaughter at the school bus in the morning as usual. Around 10 AM, while walking back home in a crowded area after putting her granddaughter on the bus, a criminal wearing a blue shirt suddenly blocked her path. Before she could realize anything, he snatched the gold chain weighing approximately 10 grams from the elderly woman's neck in a flash and fled. Although pedestrians and local residents rushed to the spot upon hearing the elderly woman's screams, the criminal had managed to escape by then.
Following the incident, the terrified elderly woman, Manju Mitra, filed a written complaint at Kulti Police Station. Such an attack on a senior citizen in broad daylight caused intense sensation in the area. Considering the gravity of the incident, the police launched a swift investigation. Multiple CCTV footage from Birajpally and surrounding areas were collected and examined. After identifying the criminal's escape route from the CCTV footage, investigators located these two youths from the Hirapur police station area through their own sources and secret information.
Subsequently, on the night of August 20, a special operation was launched, and Dayamay Sinha and Bablu Das were arrested from Hirapur. The following day, the police produced the arrested individuals before the Asansol Sub-Divisional Court and requested four days of custody. After the court granted the plea, phase-wise interrogation began while they were in police custody.
Under intense questioning, the accused finally confessed. During police interrogation, the arrested Dayamay Sinha admitted that he had hidden the snatched gold necklace at his house with the intention of selling it. Following this, the Kulti police conducted a raid at Dayamay's house and recovered the snatched gold chain. Police suspect that Dayamay Sinha was the main mastermind behind the snatching incident, and Bablu Das assisted him in committing the crime.
Relief returned to the Birajpally area following the arrest of the accused and the recovery of the jewelry, putting an end to the fear and anger caused by the snatching incident involving an elderly woman in a crowded area. Local residents commended the prompt action of the police. The police are continuing their investigation to determine whether anyone else is linked to this gang or if they have any connection to other snatching incidents in the Asansol-Durgapur Commissionerate area.
