The injured youth has been named Prasun Banerjee. He is a resident of the Basudha area in Kanksa and works as a cable operator by profession. This youth was about to become a victim of the complexities of modern technology and the utter irresponsibility of the mining authorities, which has now sparked intense controversy across Pandabeswar.
According to detailed accounts of the incident, last night Prasun was scheduled to visit an unfamiliar village in the Pandabeswar area for urgent cable network work. However, since the local alleys and correct routes were unfamiliar to him, he chose Google Map, the popular navigation app on his smartphone, as his sole reliance. Strictly following the directions shown by the map, he was proceeding towards his destination along a tarred road. But he had no inkling that this digital guidance of modern technology was waiting as a death trap for him. This mishap occurred due to the darkness of the night and blind following of the unfamiliar guide.
Notably, extraction work for the Mahalaxmi Open Cast coal mine is currently underway in various parts of the Pandabeswar industrial zone. Due to the continuous expansion of this mine's periphery, many old roads, commuting paths, and residential areas have come under the purview of the mining project. According to rules, adequate barricades, bright signboards, or warning signs should be present in all these dangerous and mine-affected areas, but in reality, they are nowhere to be seen. As a result, ordinary people or drivers often fall victim to severe confusion in the dark of night. Prasun Babu also came across a very dangerous turn or vast pit in one such mine-affected area. Failing to see the road ending right in front of his eyes in the darkness of the night, he fell straight down with his bike into the nearly 30-foot-deep mine pit.
Meanwhile, when Prasun did not return home even after the night passed and morning broke, his family members naturally fell into extreme anxiety. His elder brother, Subrata Banerjee, told the media that since Prasun did not return home late last night, they became extremely worried and immediately started trying to contact him on his mobile phone. After much effort, though the phone was received, Prasun started providing completely misleading and incoherent information about his current location. Sometimes he would claim that he was stuck on the banks of the Ajay River, and at other times he would say in panic that he was in Durgapur. It took time for the family to realize that due to physical injury and mental distress from falling into a deep mine in the dark of night, he was unable to convey the correct location or situation.
Finding no other way, the family finally sought help from the other side of modern technology—that is, using geo-tagging, they started tracking the live location of his mobile. On Saturday morning, with the help of that technology, Prasun's exact location was finally uncovered. It was found that he and his smashed bike were lying in a dangerously deep pit of the Mahalaxmi open-cast mine in Pandabeswar in a moribund state.
As this tragic news spread in the area, extreme panic broke out in a moment. Officers and workers in charge of the mine quickly rushed to the spot for rescue. The local police administration was also informed. Ordinary people of the area also lent a hand in the rescue work, showing humanity. Finally, after several hours of effort by deploying heavy Poclain or excavator machines into the mine, the injured Prasun Banerjee and his damaged bike were somehow pulled up from the nearly 30-foot-deep pit.
As soon as he was rescued, he was rushed to the local hospital for treatment. But due to the rapid deterioration of his physical condition there, as per the advice of the doctors, he has now been shifted to a renowned private hospital in Durgapur. There, he is undergoing treatment in the hospital's Critical Care Unit (ICU) in a very critical condition. This sudden incident has sparked intense anger and discontent among the general public of the area regarding the security arrangements of the mining authorities and leaving unsecured mine pits open everywhere. The common people's question is that if mines are left unsecured like this, the apprehension of bigger accidents happening in the near future remains.
