Balurghat: Ward number 8 councilor Surjee Saha has been appointed as the new chairman of Balurghat Municipality. After a long struggle, finally on the instructions of the state leadership, the vacant post of Chairman was filled through this appointment on Saturday. It is noteworthy that on December 19, 14 councilors of the Municipal Council brought a no-confidence motion against the former Chairman of Balurghat Municipal Council, Ashok Mitra. Due to the consequences of that incident, he resigned from the post of Chairman on 31 December. When his resignation letter was accepted by the Municipal Council on January 10 this year, the post of Chairman officially became vacant. After this, administrative uncertainty continued for about a few weeks and on Saturday, with the intervention of the state leadership, Surjit Sahar's name was finalized as the new chairman. After getting the new responsibility, the Municipal Administration is hoping to resume the normal functioning of the Municipal Corporation. Besides, it is reported that the post of Vice Chairman of Balurghat Municipality, which was vacant for a long time, is about to be filled. Overall, this change in the leadership of the Municipal Council has initiated a new discussion in the political and administrative arena.
