Nirbheek Bengali,Asansol: Beej Asansol has practically turned into a jungle city due to the suspension of work of sanitation workers for the last eight days. Aligali—Sarbaptra Abarjanar Stupa from the main road of the city. In protest against this situation, on Friday, Left Front on one side and District Youth Congress on the other side protested in separate programs in Asansol city. On Friday morning, the Left Front led a protest march in Asansol city demanding cleaning of the jungle and went to talk to the mayor. Left Front leader Loknath Chatterjee said, "For eight days, the sanitation workers have been protesting against their rightful demand. As a result, the entire city has been covered in sewage. However, no effective steps have been taken by the Municipal Corporation to clean the sewage. The Municipal Corporation has failed to provide even the minimum services." He further said that the Safai workers are taking part in the movement to demand their just rights including PF and ISI and the Left Front is fully supporting this movement. The Left Front assures to remain with the workers in the fight for their rights in the coming days. On the other hand, on Friday afternoon, a protest was held in front of the Asansol Municipal Office on behalf of the District Youth Congress demanding cleanliness of the forest. District Youth Congress President Samvid Mukherjee said, “The entire city has been engulfed by the sanitation workers protesting against the demands related to mine, PF and ESI. The Municipal Corporation should immediately sit in discussion with the sanitation workers and solve the problem.” He said more sarcastically, “The Municipal Corporation used to promote ‘Clean Asansole, Green Asansole’. But today Asansole has turned into ‘Dustbin Asansole’. Due to the dustbin, dirt has spread on the roads, the pedestrians are not able to walk. The Municipal Corporation should free the people of Asansole from this misery.”In this situation, Asansol Municipality's Chief Legislative Officer took a tough stand regarding the claims of sanitation workers. He should clearly inform, "Last year, the salary of the sanitation workers was increased. Compared to any other municipality in West Bengal, they are being given Rs 358 more salary and Rs 50 per PF. It is not possible to increase the salary in the next two years unless the financial condition of the municipality improves." Safai worker leader Prasenjim said regarding the hooliganism, Mr. “Well said, at the gate of the forest felluk town.” He also said that alternative system of road cleaning is also being considered.Meanwhile, common people are angry over the situation in the city. In many areas including in front of Asansol South Police Station, roads were covered with mud and traffic was virtually immobile. On top of that, cow riots have made the situation even more dire. Complaints of local residents, “Let us make it regular. However, the Municipal Corporation is not able to fulfill the responsibility of keeping the city clean. If this continues, various diseases including diarrhoea, dengue, respiratory problems will spread.” The residents of Asansol are currently facing extreme hardships due to conflict, agitation and administrative tension – this is the real picture of the city now.
